Waste Management
By 2026, at least 70% of waste from Nordstern’s construction sites will be recycled
Recycling and sorting
The construction industry generates 30% of Denmark’s waste. To limit waste volumes and increase the recyclability of construction waste, Nordstern has monitored the volume of waste generated at our construction sites and how it is managed since 2021. These data are analysed to enable us to set relevant waste-reduction targets.
We have dishwashers at all our construction sites to eliminate the use of disposable tableware. We also focus on correct waste sorting and follow-up.
In 2025, 60% of the sorted waste from our construction sites was sent for recycling, 38% for incineration and 2% for landfill. We are working to increase the proportion sent for recycling, having set a target in 2025 of achieving a 70% recycling rate in future.
At Trælasten, we are running a pilot project in the period to 2029. All usable materials from the existing buildings on the site are being catalogued so that they can be used in future buildings on the site.
We work with concrete initiatives
Recycling
At Nordstern, we have experience in resource mapping to identify which materials from existing buildings on a site can be reused or recycled during demolition, as well as which fixed fittings can be retained during renovation. Relevant materials are incorporated into the project, while others are used in new projects.
For example, we have reused bricks from existing buildings scheduled for demolition in the construction of new buildings.
For the materials concerned, reuse can eliminate the need for raw-material extraction and production.
Recycling (waste sorting)
In Nordstern we have, among other things:
- Recycled crushed concrete from demolished buildings for foundations in new buildings.
- Recycled existing floors, which are carefully picked up and sanded, then used in the same or other projects.
- Preservation and reuse of existing concrete structure.
In addition to a prior resource mapping, the waste sorting on construction sites is an important tool to be able to recycle as many materials as possible.
