Expansion of the existing centre and construction of 135 homes and a commercial tower
Herlev Town Centre is undergoing radical renovation and extension, aimed at creating a coherent, modern building. The shopping mall, Herlev Bymidte Butikscenter was originally built in the mid-1970s and the place reflects several rebuilds and extensions.
Herlev Town Centre is an important social meeting place for the municipality's residents. This was a significant focus area in the planning stages, based on the needs of the client Nrep, Herlev Municipality and the town's residents. The project consists of three main areas: The Centre included parking, housing and commercial tower.
The existing centre has been expanded on the ground floor and first floor with more retail and more parking spaces. Facing Herlev Ringvej, new buildings with sandwich elements have been erected on two floors as an extension of the centre to the north-east and the commercial tower to the south-east. The new mall on the ground floor will create new diagonal connections, and opening up the centre to the intersection at Herlev Ringvej and Herlev Hovedgade. The facade will be opened up with glass, making the shops visible.
The project includes two new building sections on the second floor, positioned as two independent buildings on top of the centre. ‘Boligslangen’ (The Housing Tube) will consist of homes of six to eight floors, and prefabricated, box homes. The living area will be 12,500 square meters with 135 homes of between 50 square meters and 130 square meters. The homes will have access to a raised courtyard. Several of the apartments will have a balcony. The homes are aimed at a wide range of residents, from singles to families with children.
Herlev's new landmark, ‘Erhvervstårnet’ (The Commercial Tower), is a new high-rise building of 11 floors opposite the intersection of Herlev Hovedgade and Herlev Ringvej. On the ground floor there is access to the centre's 'citizen square', where Herlev's citizens can get in touch with Herlev Municipality. Herlev Municipality will also occupy a number of floors further up in the tower. The remaining floors will be ordinary office leases.
The project will create a new, dynamic town centre, which will also have a station on the upcoming light rail line.
