Construction of a new Danish National Archives in Viborg

Nordstern has constructed the Danish National Archives in Viborg as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and is responsible for the building's operation for a 25-year period, managed by Widotec Kirkebjerg A/S. The building was constructed for the Danish Building and Property Agency and leased to the Danish National Archives.

The archive is designed to hold up to 72,000 linear meters of archival material, with the site allowing for expansion with an additional 50,000 linear meters if needed in the future.

Architecturally, the new archive is an almost completely enclosed building with no public access. The facades are made of graphic concrete elements, with the facade decoration etched into the concrete resembling a book spine.

To optimize building operation, quality materials and reliable installations were chosen. The building is supplied by a combination of new and traditional energy sources that supplement and complement each other for optimal operation. Additionally, the building's main geometry helps minimize energy consumption, while the minimal opening area in the facade reduces the risk of leaks and other impacts that could endanger a stable indoor climate.

It is a technically complex construction with requirements for temperature and humidity control and optimal use of the building for compact storage of archival materials in a mobile shelving system over two floors. The state-of-the-art climate control ensures an ideal storage environment for the many documents. Among other things, a climate-controlled room has been set up for old and fragile parchments from the Middle Ages.

The building is energy efficient and meets the 2020 energy requirements of the building regulations.
