New health and community centre for Ishøj Municipality

Brohuset

Conversion of an existing vocational school into a modern health and community centre

Ishøj Municipality purchased Brohuset, an approximately 12,000-sq m building in the heart of Ishøj near Copenhagen. The building previously housed the educational institution NEXT, but was transformed into a modern health and community centre.

The medical clinic, home care, home nursing and municipal youth services (Ishøj Uddannelse & Job) had moved into Brohuset prior to the renovation. Following the renovation, Brohuset houses a rehabilitation centre, a community centre, a senior workshop and a large communal kitchen. The long-term ambition is also to get more healthcare services to move in.

The first phase was carried out while the building was in operation and included the demolition of the existing 3,900-sq m building and the conversion and renovation of existing buildings into 2,900 sq m of space. The converted premises house the chiropractor and Foreningsliv- og Netværksområdet for Ishøj Municipality's many associations and volunteer networks.

The first phase was delivered in July 2021.

The second phase included the demolition of approximately 800 sq m of existing building and the construction of approximately 1,900 sq m of rehabilitation and rehab facilities for citizens. There are also a LivingLab and a 75-sq m Toy Library.

The second stage further boosted sustainability in a rewarding collaboration with Realdania. This included sustainability analysis to determine the possibilities of preserving parts of the existing structures, how to use more sustainable materials and how to reduce CO₂ emissions.

The second stage was delivered in August 2022.
