Renovation and conversion of 249 homes and the demolition of 200 homes

Birkeparken Unit 16

Birkeparken consists of 11 blocks of apartments. As part of the project, one of the blocks, containing 143 homes, will be demolished

Renovation of 449 homes in Birkeparken. Birkeparken is part of the 'Vollsmose' residential area, which is subject to a statutory development plan: the Ghetto Plan. The purpose of the renovation is to reduce the number of public housing family homes and to attract a diversity of residents.

The project includes the demolition of 200 public housing homes. Birkeparken consists of 11 blocks of apartments. As part of the project, one of the blocks, containing 143 homes, will be demolished. The remaining 57 homes have been removed from parts of the remaining blocks of apartments or on the ground floor, where arrival and common areas will be established. After the renovation, Birkeparken will have a total of 249 homes.

In addition to the new arrival areas, outdoor areas will be either renovated or established at Birkeparken, contributing to biodiversity, infrastructure and the community.

The project includes facade and energy renovation, and extensive renovation of kitchens, bathrooms and technical facilities. Wooden floors, windows and doors will also be rebuilt and renovated. The aim of the renovation is to ensure an optimisation of the homes’ indoor climate and energy consumption.

In the three tallest blocks, lifts will be installed to ensure accessibility for the residents, and to make the area attractive to the wide range of residents.

The renovation will involve several sustainable measures: e.g. energy saving on the construction site with green electricity from renewable energy sources; the use of heat pump systems: and sorting and recycling building parts and fixtures wherever possible.

The project also involves various social initiatives. This includes requirements for the employment of apprentices and students by specialist contractors, and offers on the construction site for resource persons in collaboration with job centres and local companies.

The demolition and renovation process involved environmental remediation.

Hand-over

"We at FAB are very much looking forward to continuing the development of Vollsmose along the same sustainable path that we followed in Fyrreparken. Sustainable construction is a natural part of FAB's strategy, so we are delighted that environmental, economic and, particularly, social sustainability measures are being incorporated in Birkeparken for the benefit of our residents. After the renovation, Birkeparken can be certified as DGNB silver. This underlines the fact that we made sustainable decisions in the project to benefit the environment and the residents."
